Jayco's attempt at selling cut-price forward-fold tent trailers in one of the most competitive RV market segments in Australia appears to have come to an end, with the big-selling Dandenong, Victoria RV manufacturer recently removing all references to the Jayco JTRAK tent trailer from its company website.
Jayco Australia is yet to officially announce whether the JTRAK tent trailer released two years ago will still be produced at the RV giant's Melbourne mega-factory which is currently closed temporarily, with a Jayco spokesperson telling caravancampingsales that: "At this stage we’re not releasing any new information (in reference to) new models and (new product) launches".
However, it's believed the Jayco JTRAK has been a slow seller at dealers, with budget buyers much preferring Jayco's locally-built wind-up campers and JPod teardrop-style campers (both priced similarly to the JTRAK from $18,990), or opting for the more trendy but higher priced new Jayco CrossTrak hybrid campers.
Introduced in late-2018, the JTRAK range was a bold attempt by Jayco to grab a slice of the booming cheap tent trailer market dominated by Chinese brands including MDC, Black Series, EzyTrail, Stoney Creek and Mars, which together account for thousands of sales annually and as much as a third of the overall RV market in Australia.
Jayco has dominated the more traditional wind-up camper trailer market for decades, with tens of thousands sold since 1975, and to cement its reputation as a market price leader recently introduced a new six-berth Lark model priced from $20,990 aimed at families on tight budgets.
The lightweight Jayco JTRAK was also aimed at younger parents, with under-canvas sleeping for two adults and two children along with a slide-out external kitchen. Both on-road and off-road versions were available, priced from $18,990 to $23,990.
The locally-assembled JTRAK was advertised in Jayco's 2020-model 'Adventure' range brochure released earlier this year, and featured in a promotional video (below) spruiking its 'Australian Made' credentials, despite some major components like the main body being sourced from China.
The JTRAK was also one of the first Jayco models to be available with a factory-option inflatable annexe.
A few 2018- and 2019-plate JTRAK campers are currently available online, mostly from dealers.
