Jayco set order books fluttering at this year’s Melbourne Leisurefest when it reintroduced its dormant Starcraft budget caravan nameplate after nearly two years on the shelf, show priced from $46,490.
Aimed squarely at first caravan buyers, the Starcraft focuses on the 19ft market ‘sweet spot’, offering budget caravan buyers a price-focussed alternative to its equivalent-sized Freedom and Journey models, while also tempting used caravan buyers to consider it as a new van alternative.
The reborn Jayco Starcraft comes equipped with most of today's wanted features and is currently only available in two sub-2000kg Tare weight models: a 19.61.6 family van with a front side door, transverse front queen bed and twin stacked rear door-side bunks and a 19.61-4 couples caravan, with a rear side door, island front north-south queen bed.
Both feature almost identical bodywork, with fully insulated quad-layer walls with ribbed aluminium external cladding over 3mm ply, an aluminium frame and internal wall ply.
Central kitchens and café dinette lounges, separate shower and toilet ensuite bathrooms, plenty of overhead cupboards and under-bed and under-bench storage are common to both Starcrafts.
The decision to resurrect the StarCraft name nearly two years after it disappeared from the Jayco catalogue is seen as an admission of tighter trading conditions at the entry end of the caravan market.
According to latest figures from the Caravan Industry Association of Australia, Australian RV production has slowed down recently with 1997 RVs built locally in August -- down 13,5 per cent, year-on-year.
At their price, the new Starcrafts give Jayco dealers a wide range of options to attract customers out of campers without having to purchase an imported model, with Jayco able to offer the added advantage of a comprehensive Australia-wide sales and service network and a track record of good resale value.
