Cutting-edge Queensland RV manufacturer Zone RV has slashed the entry-price for one of its full height, full off-road caravans, by introducing new stripped-back, entry level Base models that are up to $43,000 cheaper than Zone’s existing Off-Road variants.
Due to go into production later this year, the new Zone Base range of full height off-road caravans share similar fully bonded, lightweight composite body construction, bespoke steel chassis (hot-dip galvanized instead of Raptor coated) and Cruisemaster XT Coil suspension with Zone’s more upmarket Off-Road range, which starts from $113,900.
However, with a starting price of $79,000, the Zone Base vans miss out on some of the features standard across the upmarket Off-Road range, including Raptor body protection, heavy duty A-frame toolbox, lithium batteries, 2.5kg washing machine, C-ZONE digital switching, 208L Evakool fridge/freezer, electric jockey wheel and electric bed lift system.
However, the Zone Base does get some of the Off-Road models’ good bits as standard including a DO-35 hitch, 100 litre grey water tank, 12in electric drum brakes, and twin 4.5kg gas bottles.
Other standard features on the Base include 16in black steel wheels with Cooper AT3 tyres, front stone protection, pull-out awning, two 120Ah AGM batteries with Redarc battery manager, gas/240V hot water unit, 24in TV/DVD with aerial and a Fusion sound panel.
The Base models also get less solar power (360W vs 660W) compared to the much pricier Off-Road range, and less freshwater storage (90L vs 180L).
The new entry-level off-road model also misses out on a front window, electric entry steps, front spotlights and a standard air-con unit but does get a Truma Combi system for hot water and space heating.
Four Base variants are available: 17ft single axle and 18ft 6in tandem axle couple’s variants, and two 20ft 6in tandem axle models with couple or family (with two or optional three bunks) layouts.
Pricing starts at $79,990 for the 17ft Base, up to $94,900 for the 20ft 6in Family Base, which is from $24,000 to $43,000 less than the cost of equivalent size but better equipped Off Road models.
All Base interior floorplans include a north-south queen bed with innerspring mattress, kitchen with three-gas burner, microwave and compressor fridge/freezer and a separate shower and toilet, with a choice of L-shape or café dinette depending on model.
The cut-price Zone Base models are also around 100kg lighter than equivalent Off-Road variants, with the 17ft Base boasting a Tare of 2000kg and ATM of 2800kg.
A long list of optional extras will be available for the Base, including Cruisemaster XT airbag suspension, electronic stability control, external kitchen slide-out, reversing camera, roof-top air-conditioner and annexe.
Introduced at a time when new-caravan dealers are struggling to attract buyers, the new cut-price Base range is about “bringing all Zone RV’s design philosophies and making it more accessible to the market”, according to Zone RV’s Dave Biggar.
The new Zone Base will be made-to-order at Zone’s new Sunshine Coast, Queensland factory, with first deliveries expected from August 2020.
