Yet another premium Australian-built hybrid camper has hit the market, with Queensland’s Zone RV releasing the first external images of its new compact 10ft 6in Expedition hard-wall off-road camper.
Expected to go into production in early-2019, the new entry-level Zone RV pop-top boasts similar, full composite ‘timberless’ construction to Zone’s larger, fixed roof off-road caravans. However, in a first for Zone RV the 'family pod' version of the Expedition camper features a 'sloping' pop-top roof along with a top-hinged, gas strut assisted rear entry door, similar to the Windsor Hybrid.
The Expedition camper also comes with rear entry steps and an insect screen to keep the bugs out.
Standard off-road kit includes a Duragal steel chassis, with Cruisemater XT independent coil suspension, DO35 hitch, and 16in alloy wheels with all-terrain tyres.
Also fitted standard is a front toolbox with generator slide, 4.5kg gas bottle and gas bayonet, and Raptor coating, a stone guard and mud flaps, to help protect the smooth fibreglass body.
The hard shell features double glazed side windows and external hatches for storage, and it also comes standard with 160 litre water storage, 12V water pump, water filter, and external shower.
The Zone Expedition Z-10.6 has a travel height of 2.435m, and Tare weight of 1300kg, with a 900kg payload and ball weight (Tare) of 185kg.
The 3.06m long x 1.93m wide x 1.5m high internal space is fitted with a double bed with foam mattress, swing away table, 12V/USB points, 12V fan, LED lighting, audio sound panel, marine style chest fridge and a sink and mixer tap.
Internal storage options include a bedside wardrobe and overhead lockers, while the Expedition camper also comes standard with a a 100Ah lithium battery, DC/DC 40A charger, and 220W solar roof panels.
Pricing starts at $49,900, with the long list of options including a hot dipped galvanized chassis ($2150), drawbar boat engine mounting ($1950), Cruisemaster Stage 3 ATX airbag suspension ($4850), gas hot water system ($950), diesel air heater ($2800), hydraulic disc brakes ($2500) and a Dometic slide-out kitchen ($4850).
A 270 degree batwing awning comes standard, but you’ll pay extra for a full annexe or external ensuite, and the optional integrated roof-top bed which is available for $4500.
“We wanted to create a sophisticated camper trailer that boasts strength, durability and quality,” Zone RV Director Dave Biggar said. “The Expedition Series is designed for off road adventure travel, especially for those wanting to explore the road less travelled in a camper built to withstand the test of time. It’s timber-less, as with all Zone RV caravans, hail resistant, and patch repairable.”
“Expedition Series are made-to-order with an integration of systems available; add a queen bed roof top tent, additional water tank, more solar panels, external ensuite plus more to create a camper designed just for you and your next expedition.”
Fixed roof and pop-top versions of the Expedition camper were recently put through their paces on Fraser Island, alongside Zone RV’s new range-topping Summit Series caravan.
