American RV giant THOR Industries is bridging the gap between conventional ICE motorhomes and the fully electrified RVs of the not to distant future.
After unveiling a battery powered (BEV) concept motorhome a couple of years ago, THOR recently debuted what it says is the world’s first hybrid Class A motorhome.
Developed in collaboration with Harbinger Motors, the first-of-its-kind plug-in hybrid recreational vehicle is powered by an electric motor and a 140-kWh battery pack that is recharged by a low-emissions petrol range extender while being driven.
"This sleek demonstration vehicle is built on THOR’s exclusive Harbinger EV Chassis, the first electric chassis custom designed to power a Class A motorhome," the Indiana-based owner of a number of RV brands including Airstream said.
"The platform's 800-volt electrical architecture allows for rapid charging at DC Fast Charger locations, which facilitates more time on the road. The batteries can also be charged at traditional campsites, via the range extender, and solar power, whether on the road or off-grid camping.
"The hybrid platform can also serve as a backup home power source and could one day allow owners to sell power stored in the vehicle back to the grid."
The demonstration vehicle weighs around 6500kg and delivers an estimated 500 miles (804km) of range, assisted by a tapered front and rear that delivers a more aerodynamic shape than a traditional motorhome.
THOR said the prototype's electric powertrain also delivers excellent acceleration and highway performance, producing up to twice the torque of a diesel engine.
"RVs built on this hybrid chassis will be commercially available in 2025 from the THOR family of companies. The product is expected to qualify as a Near-Zero Emission Vehicles (NZEV) under the Advanced Clean Truck legislation adopted by the California Air Resources Board," the American RV manufacturer said.
