We love any attempt to recreate a well-known vehicle as a life sized LEGO replica, especially when it's for a world record attempt.
This LEGO Volkswagen Kombi camper van was put together by two experienced LEGO model makers who used over 400,000 LEGO bricks in what is believed to be the world's biggest camper built from LEGO.
Revealed at the f.re.e Leisure and Travel Fair in Germany, Rene Hoffmeister and fellow LEGO builder Pascal Lenhard had only six weeks to build this ambitious world record attempt which even includes a pop-up roof.
“Essentially, we would have needed a nine-day week,” explained Hoffmeister. “However, as they don't exist, the only option was night shifts.”
The LEGO Kombi van is based off the iconic T2a built between 1967 and 1971. This version is over five metres long, close to two metres tall (or three metres with the roof popped up) and weighs 700kg. It even has a working side-sliding door and all the interior trimmings of the original Kombi.
The LEGO Kombi features close to 110,000 more pieces than the largest LEGO caravan ever built, a 1973 Viscount replica. See how the LEGO master builders did it in the video below (you may have to brush up on your German skills first though).
This particular version may not be for sale, but there are a few real Kombi campers kicking around here on caravancampingsales.
