There have been few examples of all-plastic camper trailers over the years.
Most have been small pod utility units, like the Victorian-built Trailmaster, although larger full-height plastic campers have also been available.
'Plastic fantastic' caravans have been few and far between, unless you count the LEGO caravan or the quirky 3D-printed camper.
But now there's the new Edgeout Teardrop, a 4565mm long, compact hard body camper which the South African manufacturer claims is the "world-first moulded LLDPE (Linear low-density polyethylene) composite teardrop".
Edgeout worked with rotational moulding specialist 4WVR plastic products and industrial design consultancy RKID to bring the cutting-edge camper into production earlier this year.
According to Edgeout, the camper body "consists of two separately moulded units – a sleeping cabin and a kitchen at the back".
Apart from the edgy design, Edgeout says some of the advantages of the tough rotomoulded body include light weight, watertight construction and improved insulation. The construction process also uses recycled materials.
There's sleeping for two on the 2000m x 1450mm hotel-style mattress inside, or you can add an optional rooftop tent for another two berths.
The rotomoulded body sits on a galvanised chassis with torsion bar suspension, electric brakes and 15in alloy wheels. Tare weight is 750kg with an ATM of 1300kg.
As well as the side door windows, there's a rooftop window for night-time star gazing from bed. Storage options include a front nosecone, with a few shelves, drawers and cupboards for storage in the rear kitchen as well as around the sleeping area.
All Edgeout campers come equipped with roof rails and a roof vent, LED lights and electrical sockets, a solar-ready battery system, 110L water tank and 12V pump, two-burner gas cooker and hot water for the sink and external shower.
A number of options are available including an awning, microwave, rooftop tent, fridge and solar panels.
While pricing will vary depending on options fitted, the Edgeout has been advertised in South Africa at around R250,000, which translates to around AUD$22,000.
The camper is currently only available in South Africa, but an Australian Design registration on the Edgeout website suggests the eye-catching campers could be available here at some stage.
