With temperatures starting to drop in the southern states, Queensland tourism operators are preparing for the annual migration of grey nomads from NSW, Victoria and South Australia.
Each year thousands of free-spirited retirees from Australia’s cooler southern regions head north to enjoy Queensland’s warmer winter weather and exciting tourist destinations.
According to Caravanning Queensland CEO Ron Chapman, forward bookings at Queensland’s caravan and tourist parks were up on last year, providing a boost to the Queensland industry which is bouncing back from the downturn experienced after last year’s natural disasters.
The news follows a strong Easter period for the local tourism industry, which was supported by good weather and a two week school holiday.
“Queensland is the natural choice for those wanting to escape the colder months and discover some of the country’s best destinations,” says Chapman. “It’s not surprising that southerners crave a winter pilgrimage to Queensland and we’re buoyed that many are putting these plans into action this year.”
“With Easter done, we expect to start seeing an influx of winter pilgrims in the coming weeks. Some will stay for a short time, while others will stay for the season.
“Many return to their favourite spot year after year, while others will take the opportunity to explore new locations.”
The annual winter pilgrimage will coincide with the Sunshine State’s largest caravan show, the Queensland Caravan, Camping and Touring Holiday Show, which will set up camp in Brisbane from June 6-12.
Organisers expect nearly 300 exhibitors to display the latest and greatest in touring holidays, RVs and camping accessories at the show, which attracts about 70,000 people each year to the RNA Showgrounds in Bowen Hills.
The show's organisers and exhibitors rely on interstate visitors to work at the show, which in turn enables them to earn casual income to boost their travel dollars while on the road.
There are approximately 400,000 caravans registered in Australia, making it one of the most caravan-friendly countries in the world.
