After being ‘rested’ for close to two years, one of Australia’s most recognized and oldest caravan brands is set to make a comeback.
New Windsor caravans built by Brisbane-based Apollo will be displayed at the Let’s Go Brisbane and Caravan Outdoor Sale at the Brisbane Showgrounds in Bowen Hills from October 31 – November 3.
While no images or specific details about the new Apollo-built Windsor models have been released yet, Apollo National Marketing Manager – Retail, Simon Kerr, did confirm that the new Windsor models would be full height caravans built using full composite construction, similar to the new Coromal Evolution models released by Apollo earlier this year.
However, Kerr said the new Windsor vans which are currently rolling off the production line at Apollo's Brisbane factory “will be significantly different” to the latest Coromal models.
They will also be marketed under the Genesis model name, which was last used around a decade ago for a range of ‘stick and tin’ Windsor caravans and pop-tops built at the old Windsor Melbourne factory.
Windsor caravans were originally built in Melbourne, and date back to the early-1970s. To reduce costs Fleetwood RV moved production of its Windsor caravan range to its Perth factory around 2016, before selling the loss-making Coromal and Windsor caravan businesses to Apollo for $1million in mid-2018.
At one stage Windsor was marketed as the premium brand in Fleetwood’s caravan portfolio, with the pinnacle a 24ft Royal Phantom version with six figure pricing. More recently, the Windsor name was used for a number of eye-catching off-road models including a rugged camper trailer and unique hybrid camper.
Kerr said it’s possible that Apollo could bring back some of the more popular Windsor models from the past, including expanders and pop-top caravans, but that's unlikely to happen in the near future.
Full details of the new Windsor caravans including pricing will be revealed at the Brisbane show next week.
