Why 2025 was the year of the caravan dunny

Doing the business is big business in the Australian RV industry

It was not just the array of outstanding new RVs that stood out in 2025; it was also the rapid evolution of the humble RV dunny!

Welded bag wrap, three-in-one combo, combustion, smart flush -- you name it and there was the 'next big thing' to control odours and make waste disposal easier when dealing with those troublesome 'no.1s' and '2s' on the move...

It's no surprise RV accessory businesses are trying to cash in as more caravan buyers seek 'bathroom bliss', or just want to avoid the notorious caravan park or dump point 'walk of shame'.

Here are our 're-inventing the RV toilet' standouts of the past year...

LooSeal

LooSeal is the latest odourless, waterless, maintenance-free, battery-powered camping and RV toilet to hit the Aussie market.

It differs from some of its hands-free, bag-catching RV toilet rivals in that it's a relatively easy DIY job if installing in an existing 'van, while there's also a smaller, lighter version that's completely portable, with its own fold-up legs.

Thetford Indus

Thetford's Indus sanitation system -- basically a hands-off, stink-free 'smart' RV toilet and grey water system controlled by an app -- finally made its Australian debut after a few years on the Euro market.

Adding around $9000 to the cost of a locally-built motorhome, it's a fully integrated set-up that's built into the RV plumbing and includes a stylish, marine-style macerator toilet, connected up to 'black' and 'grey' waste and fresh water tanks, with dosing and discharge modules in a separate compartment that automatically santitize and help 'dump' the waste.

Similar to the LooSeal, the Clesana C1 looks just like a regular electric flushing cassette toilet, except it uses a heat-sealing foil-bag system that securely seals the waste once you've finished at the push of a button. The poo bags are then disposed with the regular rubbish.

The Swiss maker describes it as the "world’s first mobile, waterless and odourless welding toilet", and after seeing it in action at the Queensland Supershow, there's no denying it's a trick bit of kit...

Incinerator toilets have been around for a while in Europe, but this is the first time that we've seen one of these pricey units installed in a locally built caravan.

Fitted at a total cost of around $15,000, the 240V Cindarella Comfort incinerator toilet in the money-no-object Kokoda 'van acts a bit like a very hot electric oven, and uses around 1.5kW of power per 'flush'' to burn the goods. The left-over ash is minimal so you only have to empty it every few weeks or so, depending on usage.

Joolca Gotta Go

Joolca is best known for its portable hot water systems, but the new Gotta Go camping toilet is something a bit different in the world of portable 'dumpsters', and just the thing to throw in a basic campervan or adventure rig.

As explained in the short video above, it can be used in three ways: as a chemical toilet when you have access to a dump point; as a basic bag toilet when you have nowhere to dump your droppings; or as a separation or composting toilet where you just add wood chips and end up with some pleasant mulch...

Australia's best caravan park dunny block!

This one isn't an RV toilet as such, but worth a mention as it will have you making excuses to take a leak if you're staying at this particular caravan park.

A far cry from your average tinea-inducing amenities block, the biophilic-designed facilities at the Forster Beach Holiday & Caravan Park in NSW's picturesque mid-coast region incorporate relaxing spa-like features like ‘nature inspired’ piped music, indigenous wall art and a signature scent.

Not to mention toilet cubicles crafted from local timber and pebble-shaped door handles and robe hooks in a nod to nearby Pebbly Beach...
