An iconic RV brand is getting behind a new Aussie invention designed to reduce the chance of a fall when entering and exiting a high-riding caravan.
Described as "Australia's first and only caravan extension step", the new StediMate extenders were fitted to a number of Viscount caravans on display at the 2026 Mornington Outdoor Living & Caravan Expo, held in the outer Melbourne seaside suburb around mid-March.
Like the budget-priced Viscount 'vans, the StediMate extenders are designed and built in Victoria. StediMate inventor Darren Gibson said he came up with the idea after some friends slipped while entering their caravan, and he thought he could build something a bit more stable than the portable plastic or aluminium steps often placed at the base of the pull-out entry steps.
Gibson says the Stedimate easily hooks onto the existing manual or powered entry step and offers "rock solid stability", thanks to a number of features including sturdy plastic-free construction and a one-piece design without any folding hinges.

Each unit has extendable legs so it can be adjusted for uneven ground, and can support 200kg-plus weight. It's also designed to fit most pull-out or powered caravan steps on the market, with some customisation available.

The StediMate extender weighs around 5.5kg and doesn't fold up so you'll need a bit of space in the van or tow vehicle to store it when it's not being used.
Price is $349 plus postage, on the Stedimate website.
