Queensland is the heartland of mega-buck off-road motorhome manufacturing in Australia, with at least half a dozen manufacturers including Unidan, SLRV, All Terrain Warriors and Australian Adventure Vehicles specializing in the production of big, tough truck-based off-road motorhomes.
Hot off the production line of Gold Coast-based Unidan Engineering is this half-million dollar, Mercedes-Benz Unimog-based Global Explorer -- believed to be the first motorhome in the world based on the latest, more compact Unimog U218 UGE four-wheel drive single cab-chassis platform.
As well as the ability to take on serious off-road trips like the Simpson Desert or Canning Stock Route, the Unidan U218 Global Explorer motorhome is set up for comfortable, remote travel living with indoor and outdoor cooking, plus an interior layout that includes an east-west queen bed, kitchenette with diesel cooktop, marine oven, microwave oven, and 230 litre fridge/freezer, a two person dinette, shower/toilet, and other luxuries like a TV and roof-top air conditioner.
Off-road exterior equipment includes roof racks and scrub bars, along with front and rear 25,000lb electric winches.
Befitting its military-spec underpinnings, the custom-built Global Explorer gets a striking camo-style exterior paintjob, while the standard 145 litre fuel tank has been ditched for new custom tanks carrying around 480 litres of diesel -- good for a driving range of around 2000km.
The optioned up Global Explorer motorhome also gets Unidan's trademark rear slide out and drop-down power-operated spare wheel, along with two 200 litre fresh water tanks. external shower, and water filling and water filtration systems.
Other features include a 2.5kg front-load washing machine accessed from a side external locker, a slide-out Honda generator, electric awning and diesel-powered hot water and ducted heating systems.
Pricing for the Unimog-based Global Explorer starts around $305,000 ($176,000 for the Unimog U218 UGE truck and $129,000 for the motorhome body), although you'll pay a lot more for the level of finish of the custom Global Explorer shown here, which has a long list of options fitted including a 400Ah lithium battery system with 3000W inverter, 800W rooftop solar and CZONE digital switching.
