Unique camper promises whale of a time

Red Dot award winning camper design is guaranteed to turn heads at the caravan park

Many Chinese caravan and campers sport a somewhat familiar look, or are just blatant copycat designs, but the Whale Trailer Cabin Concept will be unlike anything in the caravan park if it ever makes it to production.

The eye-catching hybrid caravan is the marine-inspired fantasy of Chinese designer Hu Yong, and despite its super-smooth appearance when towing, opens up in multiple directions at the campsite to deliver plenty of interior space and comforts.

The winner of a 2021 Red Dot design award, it's described as "a brand-new RV design that is tailored to the needs and preferences of the Chinese consumer market".

Whale Trailer Cabin Concept looks like it was designed in a wind tunnel

With barely a straight edge in sight, the curvy camper boasts a slide-out rear bedroom 'capsule' that balances on leg supports, and opens up with a top-hinged, strut-assisted tailgate and pop-top roof.

The main body also gets a large pop-top roof, along with a full bathroom, kitchen and two other beds, although there are no images of the interior fit-out to see what it might look like.

One of its many party tricks is a two-tier kitchen, that can be used inside or will slide out for cooking under the stars, if the weather's fine.

They might have to beef up the leg supports for the production version!

We presume the aero-style, two-part side entry door with its integrated steps, opens up via remote control or a hidden latch, as there are no handles in sight.

The whale on wheels theme extends to the white/blue/green exterior colour scheme and matching blue wheels, along with the side 'gills' and roof 'fins'.

There's a quad bike parked alongside in one of the images, which also hints at the possibility of a toy hauler-style interior garage.

While it's only a design concept at the moment, there's a chance the Whale Trailer Cabin camper could make it to production. Stay tuned!
