Many off-road and Outback adventurers like to carry all their cooking gear in the back, but Jaguar Land Rover in conjunction with celebrity chef Jamie Oliver has taken the kitchen fit-out to a whole new level.
Oliver teamed up with Jaguar Land Rover’s Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) to cook up his ultimate SUV, a Land Rover Discovery which features a toaster in the centre console and a revolving rotisserie in the front grille.
The custom 4x4 also has a pasta maker, sink, fridge, transmission-controlled salt and pepper mill, ice cream maker, hand-crafted pestle and mortar designed to look like a piston, custom-made aluminium sink and a deployable kitchen worktop.
And let’s not forget the slow cooker under the bonnet with a handle resembling a fluid cap and the herb garden growing in the car’s cargo area.
Giving new meaning to ‘Happy hour’, the dished-up Disco will enable Oliver to happily slow-cook meats, grill a chicken, churn butter and ice-cream, dispense olive oil, and toast bread on the go.
“All of the modifications are fully functional, meaning that Jamie and his family can cook a meal from scratch using the Discovery. As part of the project, we have filmed Jamie cooking three delicious dishes you can watch the film on Jamie’s Food Tube channel,” Land Rover said.
“The SVO team prides itself on making the impossible happen, so was only too happy to help bring Jamie’s ideas to life.”
The modifications are powered by a combination of the 4x4’s engine and standalone power inputs.
A high-power inverter within the car provides AC power for the toaster, slow cooker and TV, while the rotisserie and pasta maker are driven by the rotating mini-motor – speed modulated via the accelerator - built into the grille.
“I gave Land Rover a massive challenge to create the ultimate kitchen on wheels,” Oliver revealed.
"I dreamt big and asked for a lot, and what they’ve done has blown my mind. I didn’t think they’d actually be able to put a slow-cooker next to the engine and an olive oil dispenser in the boot, but they did”.
