European caravans are becoming quite common in Australia, as are tiny caravans, but now there’s a Turkish-built teardrop camper available from a West Australian importer. Based in the Perth suburb of Malaga, Caretta Australia set up shop earlier this year as the Australian distributor of the tiny Caretta caravans. The compact, fibreglass-bodied models are delivered fully built by the 40-year-old Turkish manufacturer to comply with Australian regulations, according to the importer. Four versions in on- and off-road spec are currently being offered down under, all built using FRP fiberglass panels and a steel chassis with Al-Ko axles, suspensions and hitches.
Pricing for the ‘Pop Out’ touring model starts at $14,990, which includes a 40Ah battery and battery charger, radio with two speakers and antenna, sunroof, double mattress, and 32 litre fridge.
Taking care of storage is a front lockable boot, some interior shelving and an in-built kitchen located under the top-hinged rear hatch.
The off-road ‘Pop Outback’ model priced from $23,000 includes a bigger 55Ah battery system, off-road axle and coupling, lower protection bars and 60 litre water tank among the standard equipment.
A long list of optional extras are available across the range including a TV/DVD player, waste water tank, single burner cooker, air-conditioner, hot water system and awning kit.
The 4.78m long on-road Pop-Out weighs around 550kg fully loaded, so doesn’t require brakes, but the slightly shorter (4.44m) off-road model has an ATM of 750kg so is fitted with drum brakes.
Budget campers also have the option of a stripped-out ‘Cargo’ model priced from $12,000, which allows loading of around 400kg of camping gear, bikes, etc into the empty interior space through a large rear door as well as two side doors.
The campers are strictly two-berth, but an optional air pole annexe is available to create another sleeping area for the kids.
There’s also a ‘Pop Up Shop’ model with raised canopy roof aimed at those with mobile small businesses like coffee or ice-cream sellers.
Caretta Australia currently only has the one outlet in Perth, but is hoping to create a nationwide network of Caretta dealers. Australia is one of 15 countries that now offer the Turkish campers.
