The Simpson Desert’s biggest and most famous sand dune, Big Red near Birdsville, is a must-drive destination for many four-wheel drive enthusiasts.
But this July will see it providing a different form of entertainment, when Aussie singing legend, John Williamson, delivers a concert while perched atop the picturesque dune as part of the week-long Big Red Run charity event.
Scheduled for July 8-13, the Big Red Run will see endurance runners compete in a number of challenging events, including a 250km six day stage race (five marathons in six days), a 42k marathon from Birdsville to Big Red, or a unique 100km desert run.
Covering unchartered parts of the Simpson Desert, the inaugural event will be Australia's first and only 250km multi stage desert running race.
All funds raised will go towards the Born to Run Foundation achieving a number of objectives, including funding Type 1 diabetes research.
Boasting an impressive career spanning more than 40 years, John Williamson has been inducted into the ARIA Hall of Fame and, in 2012 released a new album called The Big Red.
The charity concert on July 8 is free for runners and supporters of the Big Red Run, and also for Birdsville locals. For others, ticket prices are $100 for adults, $50 for children (12-18), while children under-12 are free.
Concert-goers can camp out near the Big Red concert site, or alternatively stay back in Birdsville. For those with four-wheel drives, Great Divide Tours is arranging a camper trailer-friendly, nine day tag-a-long tour to the concert.
