Travelander hits The Dirt
Top-notch fibreglass slide-on joins other Aussie brands at South Australian off-road camper specialistOne of Australia’s best slide-on ute campers is now available from homegrown camper trailer specialist, The Dirt Off Road Campers in Mt Barker, South Australia.
It’s the first trayback camper brand for the well-equipped outlet just outside Adelaide, which was founded by long-time off-road adventurers and journalists Mike and Anita Pavey around two years ago.
Mike said the Travelander range, adds to The Dirt’s premium line-up of Aussie manufacturers including Rhinomax, Pioneer, Pod Trailer, Backtrax and 3 Dog Camping.
“We took an interest in the Travelander brand after meeting some owners up at Cape York a few years ago,” he said.
“One couple had the Evron SC2 Tray Back Camper and the other a GEO Camper. The remote-control setup and pack-up looked really appealing, as did the packaged level of comforts.
“We ended up touring south with them, from Bamaga to Vrylia Point, and Cooktown to Port Douglas via the Bloomfield Track”.
Available for both single and dual-cab utes, Pavey said the “tray back concept appeals to travellers who like to tow a boat or others that prefer not to tow at all”.
“Unlike many tray back campers, the Travelander includes a hard floor area which is great for dining at dusk away from the insects,” he said.
“There’s plenty of room to get changed and it works just as well for the kid’s sleeping mats – everyone gets to sleep off the ground.”
He also said buying a Travelander trayback is a cheaper option to a similarly-specced towable camper.
“Utilising the back of a ute contributes to big savings relative to a camper trailer,” Pavey said. “A premium off road Australian-made camper with similar comforts would set you back over $50,000.
"Without the camper chassis, wheels, brakes and suspension, you can get into a Travelander Evron DC5 tray back camper from as little as $32,950.”
For a limited time, the SA dealer is offering $1000 cashback on either single cab or dual cab Travelander campers.
Based in Queensland, Travelander now has dealers in most states, including Western Australia and Northern Territory.
