Toyota has taken the trayback camper to a whole new level with its version of the ultimate bush-bashing adventure-mobile.
Based on a V8-engined Tundra Double Cab 4x4 ute (not available in Australia), the Tundra Sportsman concept features an eight square metre platform sitting on top of the cab and rear tray. Perfect for hunting wild boar or the odd duck, it accommodates a two-person tent as well as a camouflage blind.
Another modification to the cargo bed includes a fabricated shell which conceals and protects equipment.
On the driver's side, a bed side swings out to a 90-degree angle from the truck, and incorporates a work bench perfect for cleaning your big-bore rifle or crossbow.
The passenger side of the bed incorporates cabinets and a closet, while the tailgate section includes a mobile kitchen with a small stove, sink and work surface, storage for cooking utensils and a built-in 26.5-litre water tank.
Other modifications include a three-inch suspension lift, custom air intake and snorkel, custom exhaust with pipes exiting the roof-top deck for improved water-crossing capability, and ATX 18-inch Teflon-coated wheels fitted with 33 x 12.5-inch mud tyres.
Inside, the truck was designed to be a command centre with field electronics including a weather station and GPS.
The bucket seats are upholstered in waterproof material and the standard 10-speaker JBL sound system is supplemented by all-weather outdoor speakers.
Toyota claims the Tundra Sportsman “pushes the creative boundaries of a ute, serving double-duty as the ultimate sportsman fantasy transport and base camp”.
It was displayed amongst other custom-built Toyota vehicles at the 2010 SEMA aftermarket accessories show in Las Vegas.
