Tough Toyota camper is an off-grid legend

Toyota Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept blends battery and hydrogen fuel cell technology for next-level power and water generation

Toyota hasn't let all the R&D it's spent on hydrogen-fuelled powertrains go to waste, with the unveiling of a US-built Tacoma-based expedition vehicle that filters water and can charge another EV.

On display at the 2025 SEMA show in Las Vegas, the Toyota Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept is designed as the perfect 'green' camper thanks to its hydrogen fuel cell electric (FCEV) and battery electric (BEV) powertrain that also delivers usable camping water via its tailpipe emissions.

The Tacoma H2-Overlander was engineered and built by the Toyota Racing Development (TRD) engineering teams in California and North Carolina, and Toyota says it highlights the potential of hydrogen fuel cells and the many places they can go.

Output is 547 horsepower (around 408kW) from two electric motors, with a 15kW power takeoff capable of running power-hungry camping appliances in a caravan, or even charging two EVs simultaneously via dual NEMA 14-50 outlets.

A second-generation Toyota Mirai fuel cell stack and three hydrogen tanks housed within its frame rails – 6kg of capacity -- work in conjunction with a 24.9-kWh lithium-ion battery pack to power the 225kW front motor and a 188kW eAxle. While torque from the electrified powertrain is delivered to all four wheels through a front limited-slip differential and rear electronic locking differential.

Chassis and suspension mods include a TRD billet long-travel kit with Fox 2.5 Performance Elite Series shocks, a Tundra front brake upgrade, and custom 17in wheels with chunky 35in off-road rubber.

There's also a TRD custom cooling system and patent-pending TRD exhaust water recovery system, which captures and filters the tailpipe emissions to produce usable water.

"The water is essentially distilled, containing no minerals, making it suitable for washing and showering. While not recommended for drinking, its availability adds significant utility in remote settings where water can be a scarce resource," Toyota said.

The SEMA show car also gets a customized rooftop camper fitted with recycled carbon-fibre aero panels, front and rear off-road bumpers, integrated recovery points, a winch and dual swing-outs, along with front lightbars, fog and camp lights, and tiedowns and recovery boards in the tray bed.

“The Tacoma H2-Overlander Concept embodies Toyota’s multi-pathway approach to carbon neutrality—showing that there’s more than one road to a cleaner future,” said Mike Tripp, group vice president, Toyota Marketing.

“At SEMA, under our theme ‘Powered by Possibility,’ we’re demonstrating that hydrogen isn’t just viable, it’s a core consideration in Toyota’s vision for what’s next. This concept proves that clean energy and real-world capability can go hand in hand.”
