Top-line Trakka goes bush

Melbourne RV enthusiasts get close look at the latest four-wheel drive offering from NSW motorcamper specialist Trakka

On display at the recent Victorian Caravan, Camping & Touring Supershow, the Trakka Jabiru Remote 4x4 provides an extra 100m road clearance over the two-wheel drive Jabiru, allowing it to venture further off-road than most luxury campervans could ever dream of.

Based on a jacked-up version of the Mercedes-Benz, long-wheel base Sprinter van, the Jabiru Remote 4x4 is fitted with a 'switchable' 4WD system which runs in normal, rear-wheel drive mode on the highway, with low range 4WD engaged in more slippery off-road conditions.

The 4ETS electronic 4WD system works in tandem with other standard safety and handling systems including traction control, anti-skid control, anti-skid braking, emergency brake assist and brake force distribution. Power comes from a 140kW/440Nm, 3.0-litre, V6 turbo-diesel engine matched to a five-speed automatic gearbox.

For those who want to free camp, the Jabiru Remote 4x4 comes with two, 100Ah AGM house batteries, a 25 amp battery charger, and 160 watt solar charging system, while the hot water system, cooktop, and ducted room heater all run on diesel. There’s also a 160 litre fresh water tank, and external hot/cold shower.

To venture even further off-road, options include an air intake snorkel, 80 litre auxiliary fuel tank, rear wheel carrier and additional spare wheel, alloy bull bar and upgrade to 285 watt solar charging system.

Despite its bush-bashing potential, the Jabiru Remote 4x4 features the sort of luxury items and quality interior finish we’ve come to expect from Trakka, including two captain’s chairs that swivel to form a dinette, bathroom with remote-controlled slide-out toilet, ergonomic kitchen with 136 litre fridge and microwave, full-height living area with 48cm digital TV/DVD, and king-sized  rear bed with ample storage area underneath.

The Jabiru Remote 4x4 is priced from $175,100, with the Melbourne show display vehicle fitted with optional leather upholstery, tow bar and electrics, side door screen, 1000 watt inverter power circuit, metallic paint, air compressor and tyre inflation kit, and room fan, priced at $187,980 (driveaway, Victoria).
