Hybrid campers have been the hot button in the Australian RV market for several years now, offering the quick set-up and many of the comforts of a caravan with the bush-ability of a camper trailer.
So what’s a hybrid camper? Essentially a hard-shell camper trailer without the canvas, they're also generally narrower and lighter than a caravan so they can more easily be towed down rugged bush tracks.
They’re also quicker and easier to set up than most canvas campers, and the hard shell offers better insulation and protection from the elements. You don’t have to worry about packing up wet canvas either…
To keep them compact, many have pop-up ensuites at the rear, a pop-top roof or fold-out hard-floor extensions...
AusRV Titan
From big Chinese camper brand MDC Campers, the Australian-built AusRV Titan is taking on the top end of the micro hybrid campers market. Priced from $79,990, it’s not exactly cheap, but it ticks a lot of boxes for off-road adventurers with a long list of features including Redarc battery system, Cruisemaster suspension and almost one tonne payload.
Like many of its micro-hybrid rivals it features a top-hinged rear pod with drop-down shower/privacy screen.
Windsor Hybrid
Aimed at week-end warrirors, the Windsor Hybrid is a unique Australian design -- a half-way house between a tent and a caravan. Like most hybrids, the bed and dining area are inside, but it breaks convention with a fully-opening rear wall similar to a toy hauler. Washing, toileting and kitchen activities are conducted outside, and you’ll need a screen to keep the mozzies at bay on balmy nights with the door open..
NextGen HybridX
Blurring the line between an off-road caravan and a hybrid camper, the Melbourne-built Nextgen Hybrid X ticks most of the off-road boxes for its $69,990 sticker price. It packs all the off-road armour including scrub bars, but its caravan-like width and travel height make it less practical in bushy terrain than some smaller hybrid campers.
Jurgens TuffTrax
Built for rugged South African conditions, the Jurgens TuffTrax blends caravan pop-top styling with serious off-road cred. Perfect for a boys’ week-end, it combines tough Cruisemaster suspension and solid composite body, with a no-fuss interior including zip-up storage, flexible bedding, plus a slide-out external kitchen.
The tough-nut hybrid camper was recently pulled from sale but Jurgens Australia is promising a new replacement soon…
Condamine Camper
The Condamine is a unique hybrid camper design that addresses the downfall of many hybrid campers – lack of accommodation for families. The four-berth hybrid camper blends huge external storage with fold-out, hard floor sections for sleeping and showering/toileting – all off the ground.
Box Campers Boss
Another interesting hybrid campers design from a relatively new Queensland manufacturer, the Box Campers Boss is teardrop-style, hard wall camper that combines impressive outdoor kitchen areas and storage with rugged underpinnings and a cosy indoor sleeping area.
The beauty of this design is how compact and light it is, while still delivering an impressive 770kg payload
Jayco Adventurer
The Australian RV giant has had a crack at most RV segments, so it was no surprise when Jayco recently rolled out its own version of a hybrid camper. The Jayco Adventurer is more caravan than camper trailer, although the smallest 13ft Adventurer pop-top is closest to a hybrid camper, blending off-road capabilities with above-average indoor living space and comfort features.
Rhinomax Scorpion
The Queensland-built Rhinomax Scorpion only weighs as much as a top-spec Tvan, yet delivers a lot more indoor living space than the iconic hard shell camper. The micro hybrid camper is compact too, with 3100mm by 1970mm body, and packs in plenty of features for its sub-$60,000 price, including an external rear pod for a hot/cold shower, and an inside toilet.
AOR Odyssey Series II
The Odyssey Series II is Australian Off Road’s replacement for its unloved hard-floor camper trailer, and it’s a beauty. A higher priced rival to the Rhinomax Scorpion, the 3.5 metre long hard-walled pop-top is light and narrow and with full off-road underpinnings should follow your 4WD into most places.
Kelly Glenrowan
The Kelly Campers Glenrowan is another intesting take on the hybrid campers theme. The boxy shape might not look particularly stylish, but it’s practical with its huge external storage space and all the kitchen items outside, including a separate locker for the fridge. The cosy interior is dominated by a queen size bed, with a small dining setting and interior storage…
