With the increasing use of composites and other lightweight materials including fibreglass and carbon fibre, it’s refreshing to know that at least one RV manufacturer is sticking to traditional methods and old world styling.
Dutch manufacturer Tonke has been hand-crafting a range of motorhome bodies since 2005 for outdoor enthusiasts who like the look of polished timber but also enjoy the comfort of modern conveniences.
Inspired by classic yachts and gypsy caravans, the Tonke campers are available in two models, Explorer and Fieldsleeper, in various two- and three-berth configurations.
Eye-catching features include polished mahogany fittings, teak wood floors, porcelain sinks and chrome faucets. The two, French doors open barn-like at the rear, while there’s plenty of storage space including an optional, vertical ‘garage’ with space for up to three bicycles.
The portable campers can be carried by a range of vehicles including the Renault Master, Volkswagen Crafter and Mercedes-Benz Sprinter.
While they may look like glorified sheds in appearance, Tonke assures visitors to its website there is “nothing old-fashioned about the technical installations of our campers. There are plenty of modern facilities on-board and the vehicles themselves are comfortable and safe".
A Tonke camper unloads in 15 minutes, freeing up your vehicle or giving the camper further use "in your garden, to be used as exclusive guest accommodation, as an inspirational workplace or as a bed & breakfast annex".
Judging by photos on its website, some funky interior colours for cabinets and bench-tops including bright greens and blues are also available to set your van further apart from the rest.
Reflecting their labour-intensive construction materials and stylish features, the campers don’t come cheap, starting at 74,000 Euro (A$104,000) for the Explorer 1 fitted to a Renault Master.
Tonke claims it will ship units world-wide to meet local requirements, but an easier and cheaper option would be to hire one of the eco-friendly RVs during your next holiday in Europe.
