Titanium delivers perfect work-caravanning balance

Digital nomads get Melbourne manufacturer to build them an office on wheels based on the latest WS1 range-topper

Melbourne's Titanium has built the ultimate caravan for digital nomads, rolling out a unique 'home office' layout for one of its latest custom-built WS1 'square front' off-grid caravans.

The range-topping Titanium WS1 introduced a space-enhancing squared off front and full-height nosecone 'toolbox' to the Titanium upmarket caravan range last year, but the new 23ft 6in WS1 'double-door' 'van built for Titanium vanbassadors Deryck and Sue (who run the Just Vanning It Youtube channel) introduces another industry-first feature to the quarter-million dollar model.

"Back in 2020 I said if we ever get an opportunity to build an office in a caravan, I'd love to give it a go," Deryck said during an online walkthrough video.

"It's risky I know because obviously we'd like to sell this 'van at a later stage and it's most probably only gonna suit a few people."

Work 'n stay

In lieu of a kids bunk zone at the rear, the dedicated small office area gets a full width desk big enough for computer screens and 'his 'n hers' ergonomic desk chairs, plus acoustic wall panelling, a filing cabinet and cupboards, 12V fans, rooftop air conditioner, fake plants, an opening window, and two entry doors (internal sliding and external security).

Importantly, there's also ample floorspace for stand-up meetings!

"That's my commute to work; I walk through the front door and then I come in the back," said Sue who works full time on the road.

"This is about work-life balance because in the evenings we can get up, we can switch off, we can walk away... we close the door and we're done for the night," she said.

Deryck said he wanted to make the office as roomy as possible "so you don't feel claustrophobic when (we're working) in here nine to 10 hours a day, five days a week...'

"This is the perfect solution for anyone wanting to work and travel around Australia," the couple said.

"Working remotely on the road allows us to fund our travels and is the only reason we are able to afford traveling."

Off-grid power to burn

The 3618kg Tare/4500kg ATM tandem-axle 'van is towed by the couple's Chevrolet 2500 pick-up, hitched up via a Cruisemaster DO-45 coupling and with top-spec ATX airbag suspension softening the blows underneath.

It comes loaded up with Wolf Fabrication external add-ons, including the WS1's full-height front toolbox with overhead bike 'garage', while there's next-level storage inside too, right down to the large underbed shoe drawer.

The kingsize sleeping and reading-in-bed area benefits from the flat-front design and more timber-look insulation panels, while the large kitchen and bench lounge/dinette get classy upholstery and a big gold sink and tap. There's a Separett Tiny 'green' toilet in the roomy central bathroom area too.

The WS1 office 'van also doubles as a power-grid-on-wheels, with a 900Ah Enerdrive lithium battery system with two inverters (2600W and 3000W) to run the twin air conditioners, and nine 200W rooftop solar panels monitored by three solar controllers.

Other apartment-ready appliances include a large internal dishwasher, a slide-out gas Weber bbq and Ninja air fryer, and a front-load washing machine housed in an outside locker, while underbody water storage extends to a bank of 80L (grey) and 640L (fresh) tanks.

There's no mention of pricing, but with a standard WS1 kicking off at $235,995 for the smallest 18ft 8ft variant, the custom-built WS1 mega-van has gotta be nudging $300K or more with its lavish work-from-van fit-out.
