Top-10 caravan selling tips

Selling your RV privately? Here's our latest advice on how to seal the deal

Yes, we’re living in a different world since COVID-19 turned everything upside-down, but life goes on… So, if you’re selling your caravan, camper trailer or motorhome privately, we’re here to help.

While the worst of COVID-19 is thankfully in our rear-view mirror, it’s important to consider that a few easy measures can make the process of selling a caravan safer for both you and your prospective buyers. While we all continue to navigate the impact of COVID-19, here are some simple steps worth following...

Wash your hands

Before meeting prospective buyers, wash your hands for 20 seconds with soap or use an alcohol-based sanitiser. The web is full of examples on how to do this…

Clean your RV

Give your RV a thorough clean with an alcohol-based disinfectant or wipes before you allow people to inspect it. If you’re selling amid yet another COVID ‘wave’, letting a prospective buyer know you have done this could allay their fears and put their mind at ease.

Get it serviced

Make sure your RV is in its best selling condition by giving it a once-over or service. You could do it yourself if you’re confident on the tools, or get a specialist to provide a service and maintenance check.

Keep your distance during the inspection

Consider posting or using video

An initial inspection or walk-through via video can save you and the buyer’s time and be a safer introduction. You can pre-film one or even offer to WhatsApp or FaceTime your prospective buyers. This has the added advantage of you being able to answer their queries. Which reminds us…

Make sure you’re prepared to sell

Be prepared to answer questions from prospective buyers, even the tricky ones!

Be flexible on price

Even if it’s a sellers’ market, many buyers still like to haggle and feel like they’ve got a bargain or price reduction of some sort, so be prepared for this.

Arrange a contactless meet-up

If possible, choose a safe, open space and maintain a 1.5m distance. And remember, no shaking hands – even on a ripper deal!

Avoid crowding in smaller caravans

Take precautions during and after an inspection

Consider standing outside during the inspection (particularly with smaller caravans) and bring the supplies you need to re-clean after the inspection. Target touch points such as the door handles, benchtops, switches and touchscreens.

Don’t forget the basics

Most of us don’t sell RVs every day of the week. So, do your homework and read our tips for buyers and sellers. Most of the advice is commonsense, but that is a commodity that often seems in short supply these days.
