Ultimate now has both ends of the camper trailer market covered.
Catering to the well-heeled is the
Nautilus, the NSW company’s striking new flagship which starts at just under $100,000. Or for around a tenth of that cost is the Ultimate Go, a compact, American-built toy hauler aimed at outdoor enthusiasts on a budget.
Built by North Carolina-based SylvanSport, the Go trailer was initially introduced Down Under in late-2010. But it’s taken more than a year for local versions, finished in Ultimate blue rather than the original’s bright green, to officially go on sale here after achieving full ADR-compliance.
With a 380kg Tare (and 350kg payload), the Go is designed to be towed by most vehicles and can be easily pulled around by hand.
It's suited to a variety of purposes, including carrying bulky recreational gear along with the camping equipment included with the trailer package.
“You can use this as a utility trailer, you can tow it with the smallest of vehicles, you can carry all your gear, two motorcycles, ATV or quad bike, boats of all sorts, and camp all at the same time,” explained SylvanSport president Thomas Dempsey, who was on hand at the Australian launch of the Ultimate Go at last month’s NSW Caravan, Camping, RV & Holiday Supershow.
The Go's TIG-welded, powder-coated aluminium frame, supports a moulded polyethylene pod that stores the weatherproof Kelty tent system.
When set up the inside tent area provides two single beds and a table, or converts to a king-and-a-half sized bed for the whole family to sleep on.
“It takes about 10 minutes to go from fully closed down to completely set up,” explained Dempsey.
There’s also a polyethylene, dust and waterproof storage box up front which “has a drain plug on the bottom so you can hose it out easily or fill it with ice and use it as a cooler”.
In closed trailer mode the Go measures 3.42m long x 1.88m wide x 1.29m high. The unit has a hydraulic damper that tilts for loading and unloading motorbikes and other riding equipment, while the top rack for carrying bikes, kayaks, etc, lifts off without the use of tools.
Dempsey expects Australia to be a strong market for the Go camper which has been available in the US for around four years.
“People (in Australia) really appreciate this kind of gear, more so than any other place in the world,” he said.
Priced from $9950, the Ultimate Go includes all camping equipment including an awning. Options include a hitch lock, cushioned floor covering, additional storage and annexe walls.
