A total of 20 RV owners out of a 38 applicants took part in the inspections over two days at the Sandown Racecourse venue in early-October. Two motorhomes, 13 caravans, four pop-tops and one camper trailer took part in a 30 minute inspection, which included being weighed and measured, gas connections and electric equipment checked, and towing set-up and overall caravan condition assessed.
The Caravan Trade Industry Association of Victoria (CIA Vic), teamed up with online forum Everything Caravan & Camping to organise the inspections, with specialists from the Victoria Police, VicRoads, EnergySafe Victoria, Victoria Building Authority, Hayman Reese and Service Safe Accredited Companies on hand to offer advice.
No fines or breach notices were issued as a result of the inspections.
CIA Vic CEO Rob Lucas said he was pleased with both the response and overall reaction to the inaugural free safety inspections.
‘Within 24 hours of jointly launching the call for registrations to participate in the two-day free safety inspection days we were fully booked and within a week we had a waiting list of over 30 consumers,” he said. “This demonstrates the need for professional education for consumers regarding their recreational vehicles."
Particpant Hayward Walton gave his free inspection the thumbs up, commenting that "The candid comments, factual information and no crap advice was the best I’ve had in 40 years of caravanning". CIA Vic plans to hold other similar safety inspection days around Victoria in 2018.
The 2017 Melbourne Leisurefest attracted more than 32,000 visitors over four days, which was the highest attendance at the annual show in seven years.
