Tiny homes have become something of a rolling phenomenon in recent years, the format offering a sustainable and affordable alternative to traditional housing. In the midst of rising house prices, Millennials are seriously considering these modern day motorhomes as a more affordable housing option. Brands are also leveraging this trend in their marketing activities, including unconventional American automaker Tesla Motors, which has powered up a tiny house with 100 per cent renewable energy and hooked it to its technology-laden Model X.
The towable demo home is currently on tour to educate the Australian market on how to generate, store and use renewable energy for their homes, while promoting the company's house solar products. It's already made a stop at Melbourne's Federation Square and will traipse around Australia over the next few months.
Tesla's tiny house was built with locally sourced, sustainable timber and weighs roughly two tonnes. It has a 2kW solar generation capacity using six panels, which can feed the single Powerwall rechargeable lithium-ion battery. And according to Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, the Powerwall can support houses of any dimension.
The tiny house contains a studio in which people can create designs and calculations for their solar-powered home.
"The tour is designed to provide a one-on-one educational experience on how to integrate the Powerwall and solar to seamlessly power an entire home 24/7, allowing Australian consumers to gain control and understanding of their power use," Tesla said in a statement.
Tesla is yet to offer solar panels here but it's only a matter of time. Australia has the highest rooftop solar use per capita in the world, with approximately 1.5 million homes already utilising the technology. So it seems fitting that Tesla would consider Australia an important market.
