Teenager takes the bait

17-year-old angler pulls $50,000 prize from depths of Goulburn River

Most people when they go fishing aim to land the ‘big one’, but for one teenager pulling ashore a trophy fish has netted him more than bragging rights and a tasty dinner.

Avid angler Ronald Clarke was fishing on the banks of the Goulburn River in the heart of Alexandra, Victoria, when the 17-year-old reeled in a decent-sized trout that had taken a fancy to the worm on the end of this line.

Rather than just scoring a couple of fillets for the frypan, Ronald discovered to his delight that it was one of four, specially-tagged fish released as ‘bait’ to attract visitors to the bushfire-affected Shire of Murrindindi, located north east of Melbourne.

For landing the prize fish Ronald, who fishes nearly every day of the week and dreams of one day becoming a fisherman by trade, was presented a $50,000 cheque today by the Murrindindi Mitchell Bushfire Tourism Recovery Group’s chairman, Paul Albone.

Other keen anglers still have the chance to win one of another two remaining $50,000 big ones in the last days of the BigFi$h competition, set on Victoria’s picturesque Lake Eildon this weekend.

The aim of the competition is to encourage visitors back to the region and promote safe and proper fishing practices. The MMBTRG has encouraged safe and legal fishing behaviour throughout the competition and the state fishing regulations have applied to all entrants for the BigFi$h competition.
