Aussies have picked their top three dream destinations for caravanning – and they span the entire east coast!
According to the latest caravancampingsales consumer research survey, the top three dream destinations for caravanning over the 2020-21 holiday period are Tasmania, far north Queensland and Darwin.
With international travel off most Aussies’ agendas, discovering Australia has never been more appealing. Caravanning is the go-to this Christmas for those driven by wanderlust, families looking for the ultimate adventure or grey nomads hoping to unwind.

Tasmania topped the survey with Queensland destinations Cape York and Cairns level pegging in the runner-up spot. Darwin was also popular.
“A touring trip of Tasmania is well worth it with stunning scenery, great roads and excellent attractions, from Hobart’s MONA to the unmissable Cradle Mountain,” said caravancampingsales RV Editor, Chris Fincham.
“Many southern travellers don’t go past the Gold and Sunshine Coasts. That’s a big mistake with all that the tropical rainforests and unspoilt coastline on offer from Cairns all the way to the tip of Cape York,” he added.

While not always easy to get to for east coast based travellers, Fincham confessed that one of his favourite destinations is Darwin.
“It’s our smallest but arguably most interesting capital city, with plenty to see and enjoy from the cosmopolitan harbor cafes to the terrific museums and galleries,” he said.

For Aussies looking to caravan over the break, Fincham provided his top five tips for post-lockdown summer holiday travel:
1) Allow extra time to get to the chosen destination to avoid rushing or taking risks.
2) Take a detour if possible en-route – there are many historic towns and hidden gems just off the main highways.
3) Try to disconnect from modern life by keeping mobile phone and screen time to an absolute minimum while away.
4) Try a new activity. Most holiday destinations offer something different – whether it’s horse riding or rafting down the rapids.
5) Rather than have fish and chips every night, cook up a few different campfire meals for the family. Even if it’s only on the Weber Q rather than a more evocative grille over hot coals!
