As the grand-daughter of industry veteran Ian Grant, caravans are in the blood of Sarah Horter.
Over the past 15 years she’s worked at a number of well-known Melbourne caravan businesses including a decent stint at Ian Grant’s Caravans, the multi-brand dealership in Traralgon, Victoria run by her grandfather for almost 30 years.
But now Horter has teamed up with Coach Built Caravans, a contract caravan builder located in Campbellfield, Victoria, to release her own caravans under the Tango brand. Horter says it’s always been a dream to sell her own range of caravans.
“Being (Ian Grant’s) grand-daughter you’re born into it, you don’t know any better,” she says. “Just about every member of my family has worked in the business – Mum, Dad, aunties, uncles, cousins…”
Adopting a factory-direct model to keep overheads low, Tango Caravans will sell a range of 18-23ft traditional-built, two-berth and family models that offer “unbeatable value” compared to the competition.
“I’m just hoping to do what Pa has always done – work on selling them as cheap as you can and get as many out on the road as possible,” she explains.
The first Tango Flash model off the line is a fully-equipped, aluminium-clad, 18ft 4in two-berth van with a Tare weight of 1840kg and 2340kg ATM, Dripping with features including a 3.5kg washing machine, 184 litre fridge, RV Wi-fi and a reverse camera, it’s advertised at a cut-price $49,990. The approach seems to be working, with the order books filling fast.
“We’re up to about 10 or 11, and it’s only been about three weeks (since we officially launched),” she says.
Joining a select group of female caravan ‘bosses”, Horter says she's already applied some feminine touches in the caravan's design and finishes, as well as customer service initiatives like buyer ‘thank-you’ packs containing Flick Soy candles and other goodies. “(The caravan industry) is definitely a boys’ club… I think it works for me, and I’d like to see more girls get involved,” she says.
“I think girls have a good eye when it comes to quality and finish and colours and all that sort of stuff… (they’re) far better at it than blokes.”
