Swift unveils futuristic interior

British manufacturer takes caravan interior design into the 21st Century with new concept inspired by latest fashion trends

Deep shag pile rugs, textured feature walls, cosy mood lighting...

UK caravan manufacturer Swift has laid out its vision for the future of caravan interior design, with its first-ever concept caravan.

Unveiled at last month’s NEC Caravan and Camping Show in the UK, the Challenger SE-based Swift Colour Concept looks pretty much like any regular British caravan from the outside. But pop your head inside and it looks like something from the pages of Vogue Living.

Swift design director Chris Milburn told the CaravanTimes website that the reason for stretching the boundaries of interior design was simply “we wanted to do something different”.

“The difficulty we have often is that it’s quite a conservative industry we’re in and any new developments we do that are pushing the boundaries of design come with a certain element of commercial risk,” he explained.

“So we took the opportunity here to develop a concept caravan to limit the risk and to get firsthand information from our customers.”

Inspired by modern domestic interiors as well as high-end boats, the Swift Concept’s interior has been designed with distinct zones, each creating a certain mood specific to that area.

“We wanted to try and create a domestic feel to the product and in a house you’ve got a bedroom, you’ve got a kitchen, you’ve got a lounge, and each one of those areas has a very distinctive feel and atmosphere, and we wanted to try and recreate that within a caravan,” he said.

For example, the section up front goes for a “cosy”, inviting lounge-room look with extensive use of downlighting, tabard instead of conventional curtains, and dark, hessian-style upholstery.

Dark brown, shag pile rugs in the lounge and bedroom, covering the wood-effect lino floor, also add a “sense of luxury”, as do the glossy, cream painted cabinet doors with chrome detailing.

Each area also has a focal point, like the feature wall with embossed patterned wallpaper situated in the hallway.

The Swift designers were also inspired by luxury hotel design trends, utilising rounded-edge, illuminated mirrors in the bathroom and creating a “boutique hotel feel” in the bedroom.

Judging by public feedback in the UK, Swift is onto a winner, although there’s no announcement yet whether the new look will make it into production models like those currently sold in Australia.
