Volkswagen's factory-built California Beach Limited Edition camper had its first Australian 'outing' at a surfing competition and classic Kombi rally held at Sydney's Cronulla Beach earlier this month.
With the first 30 Australian-delivered examples of the modern day VW Kombi camper selling out fast back in June, it was a chance for potential buyers of 2021-delivery vehicles to get up close with the first 'lifestyle' examples of the latest Volkswagen T6.1 Transporter vans.
The California and Multivan Cruise 'lifestyle' versions bring unique camper-style features to the Transporter commercial van range, including an electro-hydraulic pop-top roof and four sleeping berths in the California -- although there's no in-built kitchen or other typical campervan features, making it more of a week-ender than big-lapper.
Standard features for the Volkswagen California Beach include interior blinds, a bed extension with comfort sleeping mat, camping table with two chairs, second house battery, programmable heater, roll-out awning, power-latching tailgate and sliding doors on both sides.
The five-seat California also offers swiveling front seats, a reclining second-row bench, 17-inch alloy wheels, front/rear parking sensors, digital instrument panel and an 8.0-inch Discover Media infotainment touch-screen system.
Also park of the package is two-tone paint, along with standard Transporter active safety features like lane-keeping, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert.
Australian pricing for the short wheelbase California Beach starts at $82,990 for the 110kW turbo-diesel version with seven-speed auto, while the top-spec all-wheel drive version (displayed in Sydney), retails for $92,990.
