Support for new trailer laws

Peak body welcomes tighter regulations for thriving Australian RV industry
The Caravan Industry Association of Australia has welcomed Federal Government moves to strengthen trailer safety standards.
The Government recently announced it will introduce a Road Vehicle Standards Bill into Parliament before the end of the year, with a view to it taking effect by 2019.
The peak national body for the Australian RV industry said the proposed changes, after a four-year review and consultative process of the 1989 Motor Vehicle Standards Act, will “provide for better consumer outcomes and greater certainty within the industry with more appropriate regulatory enforcement measures to be introduced”.
Caravan Industry Association of Australia CEO, Stuart Lamont said the new laws would be good news for the Australian caravanning and camping industry, which generates an estimated $19 billion annually and accounts for more than 600,000 registered vehicles.
“The number of caravans and campervans on Australia’s roads has been steadily increasing over the last six years,” he said.
“The increasing demand for the caravanning and camping lifestyle in Australia… is built around consumer confidence in the product and having the highest safety standards.”
Lamont said the proposed changes will see better identification of caravanning product and a consistent approach to both locally manufactured and imported product.
“Importantly it will also see improved enforcement provisions surrounding what is already one of the toughest compliance standards globally within the industry providing greater confidence and certainty for manufacturers and importers seeking to supply product into a highly competitive market,” he said.
“We are encouraged that Australian consumers will be better protected through the strengthening of the laws governing trailers in the Australian market in the Act.”
Any new laws could also influence the number of RV imports, with a proposed loosening of rules regarding the importation of ‘specialist and enthusiast’ vehicles including original-build campervans and motorhomes.
