Supersized triple axle caravan breaks cover

Monster 32ft twin slide-out touring caravan emerges from Sunland's Queensland factory

Australian-built caravans continue to reach new heights in terms of size, weight, comfort levels and price, with another 'supersized' example recently rolling out of the busy factory of Queensland custom-built specialist Sunland Caravans.

Described by Sunland Caravans' boss Roy Wyss as an "apartment on wheels", the 32ft triple axle touring caravan has an 8ft (2.4m) longer body than Jayco's biggest Silverline caravan, and with twin slide-outs delivers a roomy layout designed more for full-time living than holiday touring.

The twin slide-outs deliver the sort of empty floorspace you'd normally only find in a big American fifth-wheeler,  with the home-style feel extending to an extra-large bathroom/laundry area with top load washing machine, medicine cabinet, cassette toilet and shower cubicle with built-in seating.

The bathroom/laundry 'room' adjoins a relatively compact master bedroom at the front of the van, with north-south queen bed, wall-to-wall overhead cupboards and its very own rooftop air-conditioner.

With enough room to kick around a footy, the main living area boasts an onside slide-out section with separate dinette and twin Italian-leather recliner chairs with remote controlled footrests.

Directly opposite is another big slide-out holding a large entertainment and storage unit with space for a big-screen TV and another roof-top air conditioner positioned directly overhead.

The kitchen area is also on the large size with plenty of cupboards, big fridge and L-shaped benchtop. However, the owner couple has opted for a relatively small sink and no built in cooker; instead relying on a plug-in electric cooker and halogen hot plate for inside cooking.

Other unique custom touches include bright gloss burgundy furniture fascias spread throughout the van, and a full-width day bed at the rear that converts to another sleeping area thanks to another double bed that folds out from the wall.

Bathroom/laundry is about as big as you get in an Aussiecaravan

Owners Alan and Sheryn plan to live in their unique 32ft van full-time, towing it with a diesel-engine truck to various shows around the country while running a small business. As such, it's believed the van is not fitted with any batteries or solar panels (or at least not to the level you'd normally find in a van this size), as it's destined to spend most of its life plugged in at caravan park powered sites.

In size if not price, Sunland's latest custom built mega-van trumps the $250,000-plus 25ft Sunland Phoenix Federation with twin slide-outs that the Caboolture-based manufacturer built in 2018.
