Supersized caravan generates water from thin air

Off-grid glamour van now comes with industry-first atmospheric water generator, but it ain't cheap

After releasing the "the most powerful caravan on earth" in 2021, Californian manufacturer Living Vehicle has gone a step further with its apartment-on-wheels, off-grid travel trailer by fitting an innovative water system that uses humidity in the air to create potable water.

The 2023 Living Vehicle Pro-EV caravan is believed to be the first recreational vehicle fitted with the world-first vehicle on-board drinking system, introduced last year by Israeli company Watergen.

Powered by the caravan's onboard electrical system, the water generation system uses a complex combination of dust filtration, patented heat exchange technology, UV filtration and mineralization, to produce up to 23 litres of squeaky clean H2O per day.

Living Vehicle says the built-in Watergen system only requires minor maintenance, and pipes the fresh water to the onboard 378 litre storage tanks (which can also be filled the usual way via a mains pressure tap).

Pitched at 'vanlife' digital workers, the 2023 Living Vehicle model is also available with a new Creative Studio package which bundles up the latest Apple products including dual Apple Pro 6K XDR displays, a choice of a Mac Studio or 16in MacBook Pro, wireless keyboard and trackpad, twin speakers and wired headphones.

The computer hardware is all mounted above a large walnut desk in the mobile office section of the 'van that, when not being used, quickly converts to a queen-sized memory-foam bed.

Otherwise, the latest top-spec 29ft Pro-EV caravan runs the same impressive off-grid set-up as last year's model, including 3400W of roof-top solar that feeds into a massive 57.6kWh lithium battery pack connected to a 20kW hybrid inverter.

Digital office converts to another bed in seconds

As well as running all the domestic appliances for hours, if not days on end, Living Vehicle says there's enough stored energy to top up an electric vehicle towing it, using the integrated 240V Level 2 fast charger, thereby keeping the entire rig 'unplugged' and off the grid indefinitely.

"The 2023 Living Vehicle breaks down barriers for nomadic homeowners. It is our most powerful trailer to date, thanks to our proprietary LVEnergy system," said Living Vehicle co-founder Matthew Hofmann.

"Being able to create our water from air is monumental and allows travelers not to be limited by the size of their water tanks while on the go."

Pricing for the custom-built 2023 Living Vehicle 'van starts at US$340,000 (around AUD$493,000), with top-spec versions coming in at over US$500,000 (AUD$725,000). As well as deep pockets buyers will need a heavy-duty tow vehicle, with the aluminium body Pro-EV weighing in with a six tonne-plus Tare and eight tonne-plus ATM.
