It’s official! The Caravan Industry Association of Victoria (CIAV) has confirmed that not only is the Victorian Caravan, Camping and Touring Supershow moving to a new and bigger venue next year, but will be held a few weeks earlier in mid-February.
After 17 years at the Caulfield Racecourse, the 2015 Supershow will take place from February 11-16 at the Melbourne Showgrounds, in a move CIAV President Peter May said would enable exhibitors who have missed out on a spot in recent years due to a lack of space to take part in Victoria’s biggest caravan show.
“We are delighted that Victoria’s biggest and most important caravan and camping show will be able to fit in all those exhibitors we have had to turn away,” he said.
CIAV CEO Rob Lucas recently foreshadowed the move after claiming this year's Supershow could have added another 100 exhibitors to more than 500 in total if there had been room to fit them in. The Melbourne Showgrounds offers around 50,000 square metres of display space including 36,000sq.m under cover, compared to 43,000sq.m of mostly outdoor space at Caulfield.
With more modern facilities as well as indoor space, a crowd-friendly outdoor entertainment arena and more off-street car parking at the nearby Flemingston Racecourse, the new venue should also appeal more to Supershow spectators, which in overall numbers have dropped off in recent years by as much as 20 per cent.
May said the change to February would also avoid a clash with the March Labour Day holiday when many campers and caravanners are out of town for the long week-end.
However, the new dates could prove a headache for the organiser of South Australia’s biggest caravan show which is traditionally held around the same time in mid-February – not to mention exhibitors who want to attend both Melbourne and Adelaide shows.
Caravancampingsales understands the Caravan and Camping Industries Association of South Australia is currently deciding whether to change the dates of next year’s SA Caravan Show to avoid a clash, and that it was not consulted before the decision was made to change the timing of the Melbourne show.
The South Australian Caravan and Camping Show has also seen dwindling crowd numbers at recent shows.
