Suncamper upsells tough truck camper

Buyer rejects popular HiLux option in favour of more off-road capable and expensive Iveco 4x4 motorhome
NSW's Suncamper has built its first off-road motorhome based on the latest, go-anywhere Iveco Daily 4x4 truck.
Taking centre stage at Suncamper's display at this year’s NSW Caravan, Camping & Holiday Supershow, complete with fake outback rocks and vegetation, the custom-built Cross Country 4x4 motorhome is powered by a 125kW/400Nm 3.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine with six-speed manual transmission and heavy-duty leaf spring/shocks suspension set-up.
“That’s the first 4x4 Iveco that we’ve done, " explained Suncamper general manager Cameron Harrison. "We’ve done a lot on the Isuzu 4x4 and we also do motorhomes on the (2WD) Iveco cab chassis so we’re used to the Iveco,”
“It’s generated a lot of interest from the show, and I think we’ll be doing a couple more afterwards…”
Harrison said the buyer snubbed Suncamper’s popular, Sherwood 4x4 model based on the Toyota HiLux in favour of the Iveco option and its superior 255mm ground clearance, not to mention other impressive off-road attributes like three diff locks and two low-range gear sets.
“We custom designed the vehicle layout for him. It’s almost the same layout as the Sherwood 4x4 but about a metre longer,” he said.
Apart from a 3.2m height making parking more of a chore, another compromise was it missed out on the Sherwood's extra cab-over double bed, though it does have a longer rear dinette/lounge area that converts to two singles or a double bed.
Like the Sherwood 4x4, the interior also incorporates a kitchen with 90 litre fridge/freezer, microwave, and three-burner cooker, as well as a wardrobe and combination shower/toilet.
Other notable features include an electric entry step, gas/240V hot water system, roof-top air-conditioner, 19in LED TV and Winegard antenna, 120Ah 12V battery system, and 72 litre fresh water and 45 litre waste water tanks.
The two berth motorhome measures 6646mm long and 2091mm wide, and has a Tare weight of 2960kg and car licence-friendly GVM of 4495kg. The pretty basic driving package includes driver and passenger airbags, ABS brakes, and cabin air-conditioning.
The motorhome body is built to Suncamper’s usual high standards including fully welded aluminium and steel framework, and fibreglass outer shell including 30mm thick walls and 45mm thick one piece roof.
At 184,990 drive-away, it costs around $60,000 more than the HiLux-based version, depending on options fitted.
Meanwhile, Harrison said Suncamper is still offering the new Entrada caravans introduced in 2015, despite not displaying any at this year's Sydney Supershow. He said they continue to be built to customer orders at Suncamper's Thornleigh, NSW factory.
