Students learn to fix caravans

High school kids get hands-on training for future careers in RV manufacturing industry
The peak body for the Victorian caravan industry is helping students from a Victorian secondary college restore an old caravan as part of their studies.
The Caravan Industry Australia Victoria Trades Division (CIA Vic) is donating a second-hand Evernew pop-top caravan to students from Salesian College Chadstone, who with the assistance of industry professionals will rebuild the van as part of a tailored Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) program.
The school resto project is the latest initiative from CIA Vic to encourage and train the next generation of caravan manufacturing workers, and follows the launch last year of a

new TAFE training college to deliver accredited training programs for the RV industry.

As well as purchasing the van for $5000 from Melbourne Winnebago dealer Jefferson RV World, the CIA Vic will support the 12 VCAL students with a Workplace Trainer as well as the necessary materials required to complete the project.
The plan is to display the finished product at Melbourne Leisurefest at Sandown Racecourse in early October. The rebuilt van will then either be raffled or auctioned off, with part of the proceeds donated to charity.
