Stoney Creek has six appeal

New Australian/Chinese hard-floor camper takes leaf out of Jayco handbook with sleeping space for six inside

One of Australia’s newest camper trailer brands, Stoney Creek Campers, has released a new, hard-floor model targeted at larger families seeking quality on a budget.

With a design inspired by the traditional Jayco camper with a double bed at each end, the Stoney Creek FF6 features a slide-out double bed at the rear, a flip-over king size bed up front, and a central living space that converts to another double bed, to sleep six in total.

Set-up time is a claimed three minutes.

Like its other two, forward-folding camper models, Stoney Creek says the SC-FF6 is designed to tackle rugged locations such as Moreton Island and Cape York.

As such, it features a hot dipped galvanised chassis, powdercoated zincalume body panels, 14oz heavy-duty imported canvas, independent coil suspension with twin shock absorbers, 12in electric brakes, 16in alloy wheels with Cooper all-terrain tyres, and an ADR-approved off-road hitch.

Established in mid-2014, Stoney Creek is the brainchild of industry veteran Hank Rojek who runs Queensland marine and caravan dealer, the Ipswich Lifestyle Centre.

Rojek founded Trackabout Off-Road Campers in the 1990s before selling it in 2002, and more recently saw a gap in the market for a well-equipped off-road camper aimed at younger families who couldn’t afford the more expensive Seachange and Vanguard off-road caravans sold at his dealership.

To keep costs down the Stoney Creek campers are manufactured in China with final assembly including gas and electrical certification completed in the Ipswich workshop.

However, Rojek claims the use of quality components such as stainless steel ‘greasable’ hinges, 4mm thick chassis steel, 8mm Anderson Plug wiring, and 12in electric brakes make his campers “over-engineered” compared to the Chinese-built competition.

The SC-FF6 comes with a long list of standard features including a slide-out kitchen with four-burner cooktop and sink, Weber Baby Q BBQ, slide-out fridge, twin 9kg bottles, Truma hot water system and 12V pump, external shower, 100 litre stainless steel water tank, innerspring mattresses, TV/DVD and stereo with external speakers, roof racks and two spare tyres and a bike rack on the rear bumper.

The electrical side of things include a portable 80W solar panel and solar wiring, two 100Ah deep cycle batteries and battery management system, LED lighting, and Al-Ko ESC.

The 5.4m long and 1.95m wide camper has a Tare weight of 1350kg and ATM of 2000kg.

Sitting between the cut-price Chinese-built campers costing a few thousand dollars and premium, Australian-built camper trailers costing over $30,000, the Stoney Creek range kicks off at $18,990, with the top-spec, six-berth SC-FF6 priced from $24,990.

Following the current trend for solid-roof off-road campers, Stoney Creek is working on a hybrid hardtop model with shower/toilet for future release.

It currently has dealers in Queensland and Western Australia, but is looking to expand into South Australia and Victoria.
