Looking for a relatively simple and affordable way to stay in touch no matter where you travel around Australia?
A new mobile satellite internet service for RV travellers has been launched by SpaceX, the high-profile space exploration and technology company founded by Tesla's Elon Musk.
According to the Starlink website, 'Starlink for RVs' allows users to "immediately access high-speed, low-latency internet on an as-needed basis at any destination where Starlink provides active coverage".
Relying on the largest satellite constellation ever launched into space, it's aimed at 4WD adventurers, grey nomads and remote workers "travelling to locations where connectivity has been unreliable or completely unavailable".
"Users can expect high speed, low latency internet in areas marked "Available", and notably slower speeds during hours of peak usage in areas marked as "Waitlist" or during events with many collocated users."
'Active coverage' is currently only available in the lower of half of Australia, with the service expected to cover all parts of the continent by early 2023.
'Starlink for RVs' is not designed for use while in motion, and it requires a clear view of the sky to connect. Starlink quotes expected download speeds between 50Mb/s and 250Mb/s.
Australian delivery of the 'Starlink for RVs' package is currently under $1100 for all the hardware including a Starlink 'dish' and WiFi router/power, with a $174 monthly 'pay as you go' fee which can be paused at any time when you're not travelling.
