If the current crop of camper trailers are too unadventurous in styling for your liking, American start-up Grounded RVs may just have something eye-catching you can tow proudly behind your vehicle if you’re willing to wait at least a couple of years...
The new Aerodynamic Towable model from the fledgling Detroit-based business is described as “a groundbreaking towable that slips through the air and expands into luxury”, but it appears to be in very early conceptual stages with only rendered images available of what the final production version might look like.
Key specs outlined on the Grounded RVs website include a roof that “contracts into aero mode when towing, and expands to 6.5-foot standing height when camped out”, along with “remotely controllable electronics and appliances, with 1500W of solar to charge up”.
Internal features will include a queen-sized bed and bench seating with a pull-out table, a kitchen with fridge/freezer, sink, and induction cooker, and a dry-flush toilet.
The Detroit-based start-up says it will be “utilizing cutting-edge composite materials” in the construction of its lightweight and aerodynamic camper trailer, and a modular interior design that will allow buyers to “customize the layout without the cost of an expensive custom build-out”.
They will be able to do this by selecting from a wide range of furniture components which will allow the possibility of “limitless layouts”.
Working out of the Ford & Newlab manufacturing coworking space in Detroit, Grounded’s first RV model, an EV campervan, is much closer to production. The Grounded G1 battery-powered campervan is based on the Ford E-Transit panel van and is currently available as a one-time purchase ($US125,000) or on a monthly subscription, with first deliveries expected in the first half of 2023.
No final pricing has been listed but prospective buyers of the Grounded RVs Aerodynamic Towable can secure a production slot with a deposit of $100, with first deliveries not expected until early 2025.
