Caravans are used for a variety of purposes: mobile offices, workshops, temporary and permanent accommodation, stunts on Top Gear... and of course, camping.
The UK-based media arts charity group Undercurrents has found another novel purpose for the humble caravan with its creation of the world’s first solar-powered cinema.
Based in Kent and available for hire, the Sol Cinema draws its energy from the sun via a 120W solar panel, which in turn powers four lithium ion batteries that run the LED video projector.
The mobile cinema was designed and constructed in 2009, and is based on a 1960s two-berth caravan of unknown origin.
The retro theme continues inside with seating for eight adults or 12 children. It even comes with an old-school usherette and popcorn for the complete picture theatre experience.
The Sol Cinema screens a variety of films many with a green theme, and has been used to show short films on climate change to schoolchildren.
For more on this little van with a big environmental message, including how it was built, check out the Sol Cinema website. The owners are also interested in hearing from anyone who might recognize the original make and model of the van.
