A vehicle that wouldn't be able to tow the majority of new caravans sold in Australia, has won the 2022 Towcar of the Year title awarded by the Caravan and Motorhome Club in the UK.
Despite only being able to tow a maximum of 1900kg, the Skoda Karoq mid-size SUV was judged the top pick in a field of 24 vehicles, with judges highlighting it as an "excellent, affordable, practical towcar and a brilliant daily driver".

The Skoda Karoq Sportline 2.0 TDI 150PS DSG 4×4 SCR model on test also won the 'Caravan Weight 1400kg–1500kg Category' and the Family Towcar Category.
The 1655kg (kerb weight) Karoq towed a lightweight British-built 1408kg caravan during the testing process at the UTAC Millbrook Proving Ground. It was fitted with a seven-speed DSG gearbox and a 110kW/355Nm four-cylinder turbo-diesel engine that isn't available on turbo-petrol-only Karoq SUVs sold in Australia.
“This year’s Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year Competition was notable for the number of electric vehicles competing, and the EVs performed well against established petrol and diesel offerings.” Nick Lomas, Director General of the Caravan and Motorhome Club said.

All up 24 vehicles were tested across 10 categories, from hatchbacks to station wagons and SUVs, including hybrids and fully electric vehicles. While most of the vehicles tested had sub-2000kg towing capacities to match many of the lightweight caravans sold in the UK and Europe, a Porsche Cayenne E-Hybrid 8-Speed Tiptronic S with 3500kg maximum towing capacity did pick up the best 'Caravan Weight Over 1700kg' award.
