Having nailed the compact, lightweight composite caravan
side of things, Queensland manufacturer Silversun released its first dedicated off-road model at the Queensland Caravan Show earlier this month. While Silversun has been offering for some time a $2500 ‘all-terrain’ upgrade for its range of compact, lightweight touring vans, which includes upgraded wheels, tyres and suspension, electric brakes, tougher chassis, more ground clearance and bigger payload, it’s the first time the Meadowbrook-based manufacturer has delivered a dedicated, off-road model.
The 13ft Shockwave is built using the same fibreglass composite construction as Silversun’s on-road models, but with seriously beefed-up underpinnings including a full 150 x 50mm hot dipped galvanised chassis, 12in electric brakes, 16in steel rims and off-road tyres, as well as a heavy-duty jockey wheel, off-road hitch and Enduro Outback twin shock trailing arm independent suspension from Al-Ko.
Black checker plate body armour, a 200 litre fresh water capacity, two spare tyres, an internal pressure hatch, two 120Ah AGM batteries powered by two 140W solar panels, a narrower wheel track, upswept rear chassis and front stone guard, also add to the Shockwave’s off-road credentials.
The interior layout includes a north-south, 2030mm x 1530mm double bed with inner spring mattress at the front, with a kitchenette and combination shower/toilet at the rear, along with a two seat lounge with swing-away Lagun table.
The van comes standard with a slide-out exterior kitchen with sink, pump tap and Weber BBQ, with the interior kitchen featuring a stainless steel sink, although an internal gas cooker can also be fitted as an option.
Other standard features include a 23.5in TV/DVD with Winegard antenna, Waeco 110 litre two-way fridge/freezer, microwave, Air Command Sparrow air-conditioner, Suburban gas/hot water system, Sirocco 12V fan, two roof hatches, 3.0m wind-out awning, and two 9kg gas bottles.
Storage options include two large tunnel storage hatches and a front toolbox outside, and an interior wardrobe and pantry.
The fixed-roof Shockwave boast a 1.9m interior height and 6.6m x 2.1m overall dimensions, while Tare weight is 1750kg, with a 2200kg ATM and empty ball weight of around 100kg.
While costing almost twice the price of the company’s similar sized Neptune on-road model, Silversun boss Bojan Matviko believes the Shockwave’s $59,990 towaway pricing is very competitive with similarly specced rivals.
“If you look at other off-road caravans at the show, you can’t buy something like this with all this stuff on it for $60,000,” he said.
