Kokoda has an annoying reputation in the industry for selling well-equipped caravans, whether on or off-road, for prices that make its competitors’ eyes roll.
?
Now the Melbourne manufacturer has turned its attention to the budget family market with its latest offspring, a new 18ft tandem axle, full height bunk van aptly dubbed the ‘Bunka’, following the Australian military theme of the brand, which already includes nameplates such as the Platoon, Salute, Endure, Mission, Battalion, Aussie Spirit and Major X-Treme.
?
The Bunka is far from the only bunk van in the sub-$50,000 market, but what will make it very appealing is the amount of ‘fruit’ that it comes equipped with for $49,990 plus on-road costs.
?
This is not Kokoda’s first family bunk van, as it already has the larger 23ft ‘Base Quarters’ in its model range with even more features like a slide-out BBQ and standard front-loading washing machine, but the Bunka represents a price breakthrough in the family market.
?
For a start, it has a full mini-queen-size bed up front beneath a Four-Seasons hatch, with a full kitchen on the right as you enter, opposite an L-shaped lounge/dinette.
?
But its real party trick is in the rear where twin-stacked bunk single beds in the right hand back corner are opposite a proper separate shower and toilet ensuite, with a small vanity included.
?
Premium components like a standard Air Command Ibis reverse cycle air conditioner, a true family-size Evakool 12v fridge/freezer, a Swift 500 Series three-burner plus electric hob hotplate and grille, with the latest Dluxx microwave below, and an extra-large 28-litre Swift gas/electric hot water service, belie the Bunka’s sub-$50k price tag and the list goes on outside.
?
Along with the tandem axles on the galvanised Road Runner chassis, the Bunka comes standard with 15in alloy wheels, a large and unencumbered full tunnel front boot, twin water tanks, exterior picnic table, twin 150W roof-mounted solar panels and twin 100Ah batteries and a rear generator or storage locker to further sweeten the deal.
?
The other appealing thing about the Bunka is that it tips the scales at under 2000kg, meaning that with an industry standard 400kg payload for a tandem axle van it remains ‘Prado friendly’.
?
Kokoda boss George Mamo may not be the most popular man in the Australian caravan industry with his aggressive pricing, but he’s likely to get the family vote with his new Bunka.
