Scammers target online caravan show

Fake seller warning as visitors flock to inaugural Victorian Caravan and Camping Virtual Show

Tens of thousands of visitors to the inaugural Victorian Caravan & Camping Virtual Show have been warned about the possibility of falling victim to credit card fraud and other online 'scams' during the inaugural online event.

"We know there have been some scammers attacking our event and we are working around the clock to keep everyone safe," the Caravan Industry Victoria told registered showgoers on Day 2 of the five-day event which attracted 10,000 visitors, after 20,000 logged in on Day 1.

"We also want to remind you there is no payments required and please do not enter your credit card details into anywhere to log into the show. We do not take payment or your credit card details," the industry body said.

Showgoers were also reminded to only use the official links provided to gain access to the show, which is free to enter but requires an online registration process.

"Please ensure you only use the official show link to access the show http://victoriancaravanshow.com.au or http://victoriancaravanandcampingvirtualshow.com.au," CIV said.

Online glitches fixed

As well as posting a warning video (see below), the organisers also said they've made some mid-show technical fixes to make it easier to connect online using different devices.

"We were aware of some small glitches with devices like iPhones, iPads and Samsung tablets,  and have made some small changes to help get you in and through the show easier."

Running until midnight October 4, the Victorian Caravan and Camping Virtual Show is an online alternative to a number of CIV-run outdoor shows that have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19.

Stay-at-home show-goers are able to interact online with representatives from around 150 exhibitors including RV manufacturers and dealers, accessory suppliers, tourism bodies and caravan parks.

Most exhibitors are offering a 'show special' deal of some sort, while a 'Passport to Freedom' style competition will see prizes handed out to punters who generate the most points via interactions with exhibitors.

There's also an online 'auditorium' that features around-the-clock live and on-demand product and tourism video presentations.
