Heatherbae, NSW manufacturer Opalite is recalling a number of tandem axle caravans due to safety concerns around incorrect GTM ratings.
The affected vans are Opalite Skoot tandem models with independent suspension and marked with a gross trailer mass (GTM) rating of 2600kg and above.
According to a statement on the ACCC website, “the axle bearings (on the affected caravans) are unable to support a GTM in excess of 2500kg.
“If the caravans reach a GTM in excess of 2500kg, there is potential for the axle bearings to fail and the wheel to dislocate.” This could lead to “an accident risk that could result in serious injury to the user and other road users”.

The safety recall relates to Opalite Skoot vans sold around Australia between May 1, 2017 and August 1, 2018.
Owners with affected caravans should contact their local Opalite Caravans dealer to arrange for replacement control arm hubs and bearings to be installed.
It's also advised that they "cease using their caravan or avoid overloading the caravan (in excess of 2500kg) until repairs have been completed".
Contact Opalite Caravans on 0484 001 002 or email info@opalite.com.au for further details.
