The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission has issued a national product recall for some Jurgens models after fears that a problem in relation to fridges on some caravans and pop-tops could cause an explosion.
The official recall notice states that a problem in relation to the gas ignition system has been identified, in which “the fridge gas burner may attempt to ignite by creating a spark at the time the tow vehicle ignition is turned off”.
In a worst case scenario, “if the fridge gas ignition system attempts to ignite while any combustible vapour is present, such as when refueling the tow vehicle, this poses a potential fire hazard”.
It's understood the issue is related to incorrect wiring of the fridges
during installation, rather than any problem with the fridges
themselves.
Owners of PT-Series pop-tops with chassis numbers from P1400146 to P1501191, and J-series caravans with chassis numbers from C1400038 to C1501451, have been requested to "contact your nearest Jurgens dealership or Jurgens service centre to arrange a booking to have the rectification work done as required (at no cost).”
In the meantime owners are also advised that “if there is any risk of being exposed to combustible vapours such as refuelling at a fuel station, ensure that the fridge is turned off. The fridge on/off switch is located on the fridge face control panel".
Previous owners of an affected caravan are also being asked to notify Jurgens Australia by calling 03 5943 7700.
The Jurgens' safety recall is only the second relating to an RV manufacturer issued by the ACCC in 2015.
In early June owners of Jayco caravans with chassis numbers between T42094 and T80797 were warned of a potential problem with the “spare wheel bracket, (which) may separate from the bumper bar”.
In 2014 there were 10 ACCC product recalls issued relating to RV products from Jayco, Coromal, Aussie Swag Campers, Asia Motors Australia, and Thetford Australia.
