According to a statement on the ACCC website, flammable material directly above the two-burner gas cooktop is located too close to the open flame, posing a potential fire risk to the Toyota HiAce-based camper. Gas regulation AS/NZS5601.2:2013, states that downward facing flammable material should not be within 450mm (taken from the highest part of the highest burner), in the airspace directly above the entire cooking appliance.
In the case of the Jayco the material “above the gas cooker may catch alight and pose a fire hazard and/or cause serious injury to occupants”.
The safety recall relates to Freedom Campervan TH.15 models sold by Jayco dealers around Australia between March 7 and June 21.
Owners should contact their nearest Jayco authorized repairer to arrange for an appropriate fix.
“Repair kits will be provided to the Jayco authorised repair and service network to bring these RVs into compliance by removing the carpeted timber from above the stove and replacing it with a stainless steel panel.”
