One of Australia’s biggest Chinese camper trailer brands is recalling more than 1000 soft- and hard-floor camper trailers due to safety concerns around a potential structural weakness in the construction.
According to a statement on the ACCC website, a weld attaching the top of the drawbar to the main body could prematurely fail under extreme conditions "and cause the drawbar to break".
The safety recall relates to Ezytrail K Series MK1 Albany, Lincoln, Portland and Stirling soft- and hard-floor campers sold around Australia between June 1, 2015 and June 30, 2017. A total of 1277 camper trailers are potentially affected.
According to a statement from Ezytrail on its website, the voluntary recall does not apply to the latest Mark 2 models, only early K-Series, Mark 1 variants.
“There have been a very small amount of reported cases of the chassis breaking between the tool boxes and the camper body while fully loaded in harsh off-road conditions,” the company said.
“Ezytrail take this very seriously and want to ensure that no other customers have any issues with their trailers and therefore the recall has been issued.”
Ezytrail has set up a 'Recall search bar' on its website that allows consumers to enter their camper’s unique chassis number to determine whether they need to lodge a claim for repair. Alternatively, customers can call the Ezytrail customer support hotline on 1300 399 875.
The Melbounre-based business has also produced a video about the recall, which was prompted after photos of a severely damaged Ezytrail camper were circulated on social media.
It's the second voluntary product recall by an Australian camper trailer brand over the past 12 months, after cooking and hot water units supplied with Queensland-built Patriot Campers sold from 2013 to 2017, were found in breach of gas regulations.
Chinese-built Goldstar caravans built with aluminium chassis were also recalled last year due to safety concerns around the strength of the drawbar.
